SSI Tutorial

Have you ever seen sites like mine where the files end in the extension .shtml? Do you want to know what it is and how you can use it? Well then you've come to the right place. In this section, I will teach you what SSI (Server Side Includes) is about and how to use it in your webpages.

              First of all, SSI stands for Server Side Includes. What it does, is it allows you to replace a whole piece of HTML code with one line of SSI code. In addition, when you change that piece of HTML code once, it affects all of your pages. A lot of the time, SSI is used when making layouts that have tables of contents will all your links. Here's a scenario to help you learn how SSI is useful:

              You created your HTML documents with the regular .html extension. Uh oh. You just got a new affiliate. But you have 20 documents. It would take a long time to add the affiliate button to all of those pages, wouldn't it? Not if you used SSI!

              In this situation, first of all, take the HTML code of the table of contents and put it in a seperate HTML file called leftmenu.html (it doesn't have to be leftmenu. It can be whatever you want). Then in the HTML documents that have the table of contents, replace the HTML code for the table of contents with  . Last of all, rename all of those files with the table of contents to .shtml instead of .html . So, to make sure you understand this, let's go over this again:

Put the HTML code for the table of contents into another
In your regular HTML document, replace the table of contents HTML code with  . html file. For example, leftmenu.html .
Rename all of your documents with the table of contents to .shtml instead of .html .
Repeat #2 for all of your .shtml documents.

Now, whenever you need to change something in your table of contents like add an affiliate, just change it in leftmenu.html, and the table of contents will be changed for all of your pages! You don't have to use SSI just for table of contents. You can use it however you like. And the SSI file doesn't have to be leftmenu.html, it can be whatever name you want. Just remember to make the SSI file the same url source as the url source in the SSI tags. Like if your SSI file was dadarkvegeta.html, then the code you would put in place of it in the .shtml files, would be  .

NOTE:
Your webhost may not support SSI. Make sure your webhost does support SSI, or it probably will not work.
